History of Mansion and Park

Valentines Mansion, which is Grade ll* listed, was built in 1696/97. Until 1912 the Mansion and its park were privately owned – the home of wealthy middle class families and their servants.

The house and park both suffered from neglect during the 1980s and 1990s. Fortunately both were restored during 2006 -2009 thanks to grants of several million pounds from the Heritage Lottery Fund and funding from the London Borough of Redbridge, which owns Mansion and Park.

The restoration work in the mansion and park and the community campaigns to support these projects were accompanied by much new research into the history of Valentines and the people who lived and worked there. Local historian Georgina Green undertook extensive research into the families who had lived at Valentines between 1696 and 1906; she and members of the Friends gave – and continue to give – talks to various organisations, both locally and further afield.
