We are the “Friends Of Valentines Mansion” in the London Borough of Redbridge, a charity working to raise awareness of the mansion and its potential to the local community. We raise money and support the preservation and improvement of this beautiful restored building set within Valentines Park near Gants Hill. We also continue to research and share knowledge of its history.
We were established in 2000 and played a vital role in securing Heritage Lottery funding for its restoration following its decline during the years it was used as council office space.
In 2024, the Constitution of the Friends was amended, to support the improvement of the historic features and landscape of Valentines Park, in addition to supporting improvements within the mansion. It is envisaged that this will build on the valuable work completed by the Valentines Park Conservationists and will encourage wider membership of The Friends from across the community.
On this site, you can read our Constitution and much more about the History of the Friends . We are always pleased to welcome new members.
We most recently completed a project to develop one of the history rooms, the Raymond Room, on 1st floor, reflecting the period 1754-1788 when the house was owned by Charles Raymond. We also worked with the Mansion to develop a digital tour so you can even visit from home! Or in person, you’ll be able to access much more information about the fascinating history contained within these walls using a series of QR codes.
Our latest initiative is the Friends of Valentines Mansion Prize an annual Schools Competition. In 2024 we re-named it the “Hooker Prize” in memory of a very special person, former Chair of the Friends, Cherry Hooker. We hope, as Cherry would, the competition with workshops for children and a family day at the House will enthuse the next generation about the Mansion.
Many individuals, groups and organisations have been and are still involved with Valentines Mansion, Gardens and Park. Find out here about the Valentines Park Conservationists and our other Partners .
You can read more about the involvement of the Friends and these other groups in Valentines Mansion and gardens from 1993 to 2025 in an article by local historian Georgina Green, ‘Valentines Mansion – the last 30 years’.
